File Extension Ipd

Files carrying the .ipd file extension will most likely be data backup files from a Blackberry mobile communications device.
When a Blackberry is backed up to a computer, it creates a database containing all the information currently on the device, and saves it as an .ipd file. If the Blackberry's software is ever corrupted, this file can be used to restore the device to the state it was in when the backup was created. Like any backup file, .ipd files were never intended to be opened or extracted outside of the Blackberry environment. There are instances when a user needs access to the information in a backup file; for example, if the Blackberry was physically damaged and information is needed before it can be replaced. There are several applications available for this task.

More Info Regarding File Extension Ipd

SMS Borer is another good application, but it extracts the data to a .dat file rather than converting it to another format. The .dat file can then be imported into a spreadsheet or database application. SMS Borer does have one limitation that may or may not be a problem for users: it doesn't support unicode.

Since .ipd files are merely backups of a Blackberry system they do not have any specific errors linked to or caused by them. If one of these files contains any corrupt data, it will not be usable to restore a Blackberry device. In this case users may get a corrupted file error, an error stating that the file is not a proper .ipd, or just a shutdown of the backup/restore software. If these errors occur, it might be possible to extract the data using one of the programs listed above, but the data will have to be manually entered into the device. To minimize the risk of corrupted backup data, it is recommended that Blackberry users create a backup prior to making any significant changes to the device's software.

One source of major problems with the .ipd comes from an OS upgrade of the Blackberry device. A 507 error occurs
when the upgrade process is interrupted, usually because of a bad USB cable or a connection through and external hub rather than a direct USB port. With this error it is common for 3rd party applications to be flushed. If a user then attempts to restore the data using an old .ipd that conflicts with the new OS, the backup will likely fail.

The workaround for this issue to to begin the backup using the Advanced Restore mode. Select all items to backup, then watch to see on which item the failure occurs. Restart the backup and select all items except the one that caused the problem. This process might need to be gone through several times to complete the backup. Some data will not be usable, but at least the user will recover as much as possible. An additional problem with this type of backup is that passwords, bookmarks, etc., may not be preserved.

A second possible association links the .ipd extension to InstallPROG 6, an EDBS compliant database system. To date this association has not been confirmed, and no information on InstallPROG 6 is currently available. It is assumed that the software in neither produced or supported any longer.
